When you hear that I, Steve Williams, am running for the House of Delegates, you may wonder what all goes into that role and how it will affect you and your daily life. The House of Delegates is the lower chamber of the WV Legislature, and the delegates are the ones elected to represent the communities all over the state. The delegate’s job is to make sure that the concerns, ideas, and voices of the people are heard and to use that to make decisions for West Virginia that move the state forward.
One of the most crucial aspects of being a delegate is listening to the people they represent. As delegates, we could hear from families in the community, business owners, teachers, healthcare workers, and everyone in between about the problems they face in everyday life. Those concerns vary and can involve road conditions, education, healthcare, jobs, public safety, or even the cost of living. No matter the subject of concern, a delegate has the responsibility to understand and empathize with what the people are experiencing and make sure their voices are being heard.
Delegates also play a very important role in creating and voting on legislation. They can introduce bills, develop proposals with fellow legislators, and vote on legislation that can end up having a lasting impact on their fellow West Virginians. Each vote the delegates receive is a chance to represent and prioritize the needs of the people who elected them.
Being a delegate isn’t only about what goes on at the capital during the busy legislative sessions. A strong representative will continue to remain connected to their community throughout the entire year by listening to the people of the state, attending local events, meeting with local organizations, and staying informed on the challenges facing the district. This is exactly what I plan to do when elected to the House of Representatives in West Virginia.
State government can sometimes feel so far away, but the decisions made can have a direct impact on our everyday lives. The roads we travel, the schools our children attend, opportunities for local businesses, and much more can all be influenced by the state government. That is why choosing the right person to represent our community matters. A delegate should be more than a name on a ballot. They should be a listener, an advocate, and a voice for the people they were elected to serve.
